“Maine Light”
STATEMENT
This project began in the late summer of 2001. I accompanied my husband on a journey to northern Maine staying at a lodge in the midst of the properties owned by the northern area paper manufacturing companies. Little did I know that this adventure would not be just a time to rejuvenate my soul and admire nature for it was only a day of rest after a long drive from Pennsylvania till the inquisitiveness to search for the area’s intrinsic character became evident to me.
I found abandoned buildings, boats, backwaters, desolate towns, and trees being reaped from the land. I visited towns where only a few buildings stood but among the residents, I made new friends.
In 2003, to further my exploration of northern Maine, I was awarded an “Artist in Residence” position at Acadia National Park to explore the “Down East” area. I made my home away from home at Schoodic Peninsula where I explored the small villages near the backwaters of Maine.
Maine Light project continued for the next fourteen years. Each year I devoted at least 2 weeks to explore northern Maine creating a visual sense of place realized in moments of time.
